What's The Difference Between Indica And Sativa?

Updated: December 5, 2021

All cannabis plants fall into three categories: indica, sativa, and hybrid. But which one to choose? To answer this question, we must first understand the difference between indica and sativa. We're going to look at different aspects, such as:

  • duration and place of growing,
  • appearance (the size of the plant, color, and leaves),
  • smell,
  • best uses and effects or high,
  • appropriate time of the day used.

What's Indica?

Indicas grow relatively fast and have a higher yield than sativa. The plant is short, bushy and has wide leaves, darker green color. This makes it appropriate for indoor growing. They have a strong smell, usually described as sweet or sour. Indica-dominant strains increase mental and muscle relaxation, decrease nausea and acute pain, increase appetite, dopamine, etc. It gives you a strong physical body high that will in most cases make you sleepy or ‘couch-locked’. It also provides a deep relaxation feeling, which makes it appropriate for night time use.
Indica strains: Northern Light, Bubble Kush, O.G. Kush, Bubblegum, Ice, Speedy Chile Express, etc.

What's Sativa?

Sativas need more time to grow, mature and require more light. They grow tall, thin and have narrow leaves, lighter green color. This makes it appropriate for outdoor growing. They have a smell usually described as grassy. Sativa-dominant strains are anti-anxiety, anti-depressant, treat chronic pain, increase focus and creativity, increase serotonin, etc. Its' high is known to be more energetic and uplifting, which makes it appropriate for daytime use.
Sativa strains: Lemon Haze, Jack Herer, Sour Diesel, Strawberry Cough, Super Silver Haze, Amnesia, etc.
